The African Students Union at Ohio University proudly announced Hon. Sidia Jatta as a distinguished recipient of the 2024 African Heroes Award. The Award was presented to Sidia Jatta in a colorful ceremony on Saturday night by the union, highlighting Jatta’s remarkable achievements and contributions to education, democracy, and pan-Africanism.
The African Heroes Night is organized by the African Students Union at Ohio University to celebrate an African or Africanist who contributes to the development and advancement of both the African continent and people of African descent.
Hon. Sidia Jatta, a former Gambian Presidential candidate and member of parliament, is renowned for his advocacy for civic education, civil liberties, and democratic reform in The Gambia. Educated in The Gambia, Ghana, and France, Jatta’s academic journey laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to educational reform in Africa, particularly the development and elevation of African languages in education.
In 1986, Jatta co-founded the People’s Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) and played a pivotal role in the 2016 Coalition against the Yaya Jammeh Dictatorship in The Gambia. His leadership in various parliamentary committees, including constitutional reforms, education, finance, and foreign affairs, exemplifies his dedication to democratic values and human rights.
As a community leader, Jatta established the Adult Literacy Development Association (WALDA), empowering women and promoting literacy nationwide. Additionally, he created the Wulli Fund, contributing a significant portion of his salary to finance development in his constituency.
Beyond his political career, Jatta collaborated with the International African Institute (IAI), London, on projects to update the linguistic map of Africa, highlighting his commitment to preserving African languages and cultures.
