The death has been announced of former Police Anti crime Unit Chief, Gorgi Mboob, early this Wednesday morning. According to his relatives, Gorgui Mboob has been battling with a sickness over the past few months, keeping him away from work.
Many Gambians will remember Guorgui Mboob for his role in the bloody cover-up to the massacre and the repression of student demonstrators on April 10th and 11th, 2000. Guorgui admitted before the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparation Commission (TRRC) that he led police troops that indeed committed unacceptable abuses against the students and their teachers under his command.
“Gorgui Mboob acknowledged that the police were involved in this state-sponsored cover-up to downplay their role during the protests. Specifically, they aimed to mislead the Commission of Inquiry regarding the police’s role in the events that occurred on April 10 and 11, 2000,” the TRRC indicted Guorgui Mboob in the Comission’s final report.
As a result, the report of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) suggested that Mboob be held accountable for allegedly breaching Mr. Ousman Sabally’s rights. Sabally had taught at St. Augustine’s School in the past.
Guorgui Mboob, who testified before the TRRC, was in charge of the infamous Gambia Police Force anti-crime section, which had a history of violent confrontations with young people who were angry, some of whom had set his house on fire.
Gorgui was later assigned to Farafenni before being recalled to KSMD due to health issues. According to his relatives, he answered the final call in the early hours of today morning.
The burial will take place at Ebo Town at 2:00 p.m.
May Allah forgive his flaws as well as those of all the departed souls.
