Former President Macky Sall of Senegal has left the country to perform Umrah in Mecca, joined by former First Lady Mariéme Faye Sall. This spiritual journey precedes his planned visit to Morocco with his family. The transfer of power at the Palace of the Republic saw his successor “lend” him the presidential plane for his travels.
Before departing from Yoff airport, Macky Sall made a poignant stop at his home in the Mermoz district, where emotional supporters paid him a final tribute. The scene was described as deeply moving, with tears flowing freely among those present.
Reports from L’Observateur highlight the overwhelming presence of activists, sympathizers, friends, and collaborators at his home, further emphasizing the emotional farewells that took place. Upon his departure from Léopold Sédar Senghor Airport, where dozens of activists had gathered to bid him farewell, a particularly touching moment was witnessed between Macky Sall and former liberal MP Fatou Thiam, who reportedly burst into tears after being greeted by the former president.
Macky Sall’s departure marks the beginning of a new chapter for Senegal, as he embarks on this religious pilgrimage and takes time with his family, facilitated by the thoughtful gesture of his successor in providing the means for his journey.
