Gambiaj.com – (ABUJA) – The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, has dispatched an Election Observation Mission to Togo to oversee the legislative and regional elections scheduled for 29 April 2024. The mission, consisting of 40 observers, is being led by the former Vice-President of The Gambia, Mrs Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang.
A statement released by the regional bloc highlighted that this deployment is in accordance with Article 12 of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. It signifies the organization’s commitment to supporting its Member States in conducting transparent and credible elections.
The observation mission comprises Ambassadors from Member States accredited to ECOWAS, representatives of the ECOWAS Court of Justice and Parliament, Civil Society Organisations, media professionals, and election observation specialists from the West African region.
The decision to deploy the observation mission follows the recommendations of a pre-election fact-finding mission that visited Togo from 15 to 20 April 2024. The purpose of the fact-finding mission was to assess the preparatory phases of the upcoming elections.
During their time in Togo, the observation mission will engage in consultations with key stakeholders in the electoral process and closely monitor the voting process leading up to 29 April 2024. The mission’s presence is aimed at enhancing the transparency and credibility of the electoral process in Togo.
