Gambiaj.com. -(BANJUL, The Gambia) – Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA) has called for a full and independent investigation into the Nyakoi Mini Stadium project, citing concerns over transparency, accountability, and the oversight role of the National Sports Council in the management of football in The Gambia.

In a strongly worded statement, the civil society movement expressed deep dissatisfaction over what it described as the “so-called inauguration” of the facility by the Gambia Football Federation (GFF), saying the event has sparked widespread public outrage and renewed scrutiny of governance and financial management within the federation.

GALA recalled that in 2025 it formally petitioned the National Sports Council to investigate longstanding allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement at the GFF.

According to the group, the Council’s response at the time was dismissive and defensive, creating the impression that it was either unwilling or reluctant to properly scrutinise the federation.

The movement said the latest developments surrounding the Nyakoi Mini Stadium have intensified public concern and placed fresh attention on the Council’s statutory oversight responsibilities.

The project is reportedly valued at more than D14 million, with approximately D12 million provided by the Saudi Football Federation and the remainder funded by the GFF. However, GALA questioned whether the facility delivered reflects the reported cost and whether donor funds were utilised appropriately.

Referring to publicly available images and footage from the inauguration, GALA claimed the stadium appears to lack key features such as adequate spectator seating, modern dressing rooms, and standard sanitary facilities expected of a national football infrastructure project. It said these apparent deficiencies raise serious concerns about value for money.

GALA further emphasised that the funds donated by the Saudi Football Federation were intended to support the long-term development of football infrastructure in The Gambia for the benefit of players, communities, and supporters. It warned that any failure to ensure transparency, quality, and accountability would undermine public trust and donor confidence.

The group maintained that football belongs to the Gambian people and that resources allocated for its development must be managed transparently, responsibly, and in the national interest.

As part of its demands, GALA called for the immediate launch of an independent investigation into the project, as well as the public disclosure of the Bill of Quantities, contractor details, and payment records. It added that those found responsible for any wrongdoing or mismanagement should be held accountable.

GALA concluded by reaffirming its commitment to advocating for transparency and accountability, warning that failure to address the concerns surrounding the project risks deepening public distrust and harming the future development of football in the country.
