Gambiaj.com – (DOHA) – Hassan Bubacar Jallow, Gambia’s Chief Justice, met with Qatar’s Attorney General, H.E. Dr. Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al Nuaimi, on Monday in Doha. The discussion included an exchange of ideas on a variety of mutually beneficial themes, with a focus on improving legal and judicial cooperation and sharing experiences.
It is noteworthy that Qatar has been a key partner of The Gambia in implementing the transitional justice program, particularly in light of the implementation of the TRRC’s recommendations regarding severe crimes perpetrated under Yahya Jammeh’s rule. During his visit to the Gambia in August 2018, H.E. Dr. Ali bin Fetais Al Marri, the Attorney-General of Qatar, had meetings with President Adama Barrow of the Gambia. The goal of the discussions was to reinforce the rule of law and improve the constitutional system. In order to discuss these subjects in more detail, Al Marri also spoke with Ousainou Darboe, the vice president of the Gambia.
Significant developments have occurred in the judicial relationship between Qatar and the Gambia, most notably the signing of a $3 million grant deal in Banjul in October 2018. The agreement’s main goals are to advance democracy, the rule of law, and transitional justice in the Gambia.
The agreement, which was signed by the ministers of agriculture of Gambia, Lamin Dibba, and Qatar’s ambassador, Faisal bin Fahad al-Mana, represented advancements in areas including employment, double taxation, and sea transportation.
Additionally, on February 15, 2021, Foreign Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara met with H.E. Ali Bin Fetais Al Marri, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Qatar, and gave the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, a “special” message from President Adama Barrow. The focus of the discussions was on areas of shared interest, specifically enhancing the two countries’ legal collaboration.
