Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – In a robust demonstration of regional cooperation, the navies of The Gambia and Senegal successfully conducted a joint maritime patrol on December 28, 2024, within The Gambia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The operation, which spanned approximately 10 hours, aimed to enhance maritime security and protect vital marine resources as part of ongoing initiatives under the Joint Military Committee of the two nations’ armed forces.

The patrol was carried out by two naval vessels: GNS FANKANTA from The Gambia Navy and LAC RETBA from the Senegal Navy.

The mission included boarding and inspecting five fishing vessels to ensure compliance with maritime regulations. Two vessels, ABO ISLAM—an Egyptian-owned ship flying the Gambian flag—and FAYAKO, a Senegalese vessel, were apprehended for violating maritime laws.

The illegal and unreported Egyptian-owned fishing vessel ABO ISLAM, flying the Gambian flag, is captured by the Gambian Navy.

According to the Public Relations department of The Gambia Armed Forces, “This operation highlights the growing synergy between the navies of The Gambia and Senegal in addressing illegal fishing and ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources. Both navies emphasized their commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region while advancing resource management efforts critical to their nations’ economic and environmental well-being“.

The Gambia Navy expressed gratitude for the exemplary cooperation demonstrated by their Senegalese counterparts during the mission, describing the partnership as a testament to the professionalism and dedication of both forces.

The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening bilateral efforts to confront shared maritime challenges.

This successful collaboration underscores the importance of unity in securing West Africa’s waters, fostering a shared vision for sustainable development and mutual prosperity.
