Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, on Thursday received H.E. Dr. Nazim Samadov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan, in a meeting aimed at strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation and fostering closer bilateral relations between The Gambia and Azerbaijan.
Held at the National Assembly, the courtesy call provided a platform for discussions on expanding economic partnerships, cultural exchanges, and diplomatic engagement. Both officials underscored the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting national and regional development.
During the meeting, Speaker Jatta highlighted the potential of friendship groups and exchange programs between Gambian legislators and their Azerbaijani counterparts.
“Parliamentary diplomacy is a key pillar in global relations,” he said, emphasizing the Assembly’s commitment to active engagement with international partners.
Ambassador Samadov, who is also accredited to the Kingdom of Morocco, reiterated Azerbaijan’s interest in deepening ties with The Gambia as part of a broader strategy to strengthen relations across West Africa.
He expressed optimism that collaborative programs between the two legislatures could foster mutual understanding and development.
The meeting, which included Mr. Agil Gunashov and the Clerk of the National Assembly, focused on identifying concrete avenues for cooperation, including legislative exchanges, cultural initiatives, and economic partnerships.
This engagement aligns with The Gambia’s ongoing efforts to expand its diplomatic outreach and leverage parliamentary channels for international collaboration, reflecting the strategic role of legislative diplomacy in global relations.
