Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Ministry of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure has signed a contract to commence the third phase of the Bertil Harding Highway widening project. This 22-kilometer expansion, which aims to enhance mobility and safety within the Greater Banjul Area, marks a significant step in the government’s infrastructure development agenda.
Speaking at the signing ceremony on January 14, 2025, Minister of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure, Hon. Ebrima Sillah, emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing transformative infrastructure. “This signing is a testimony to the government’s dedication to rolling out critical, cutting-edge infrastructure in this country,” Sillah said.
What’s New in Phase III?
The third phase of the project will introduce a range of modern features to the Bertil Harding Highway, transforming it into a state-of-the-art corridor. Key upgrades include:
Additional lanes will be added to create dedicated service roads for local traffic, reducing congestion and improving access on the main highway.
Furthermore, a new overpass will be constructed to improve traffic flow at the Sukuta Jabang Roundabout major intersection, enhancing safety for both drivers and pedestrians to streamline traffic flow.
Meanwhile, access roads to the Independence Stadium will be added for enhanced connectivity for major events.
These improvements will be boosted by Solar Traffic Lights and CCTV Systems that will be installed to boost pedestrian and vehicle safety. In addition to the solar-powered traffic lights, there will be advanced monitoring systems.
Drainage and Landscaping: Improved drainage systems and beautification efforts to enhance resilience and aesthetics.
Addressing Longstanding Challenges
Permanent Secretary Matar Ceesay highlighted that the project, funded at $54 million through a partnership between the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the Government of The Gambia, will improve functionality and ensure long-term sustainability of the highway.
The Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA), Mr. Ousman Sanyang, stressed the importance of these upgrades. “A three-lane dual carriageway like Bertil Harding Highway, serving residences and commercial properties, requires service roads to function effectively.,” Sanyang explained. He also underscored the importance of monitoring and enforcement, pointing to recurring damages to infrastructure such as lamp poles and guardrails.
Broader Infrastructure Initiatives
Minister Sillah revealed that the ministry is overseeing 500 kilometers of active road construction across the country, including preparations for the Sting Corner-Madinaba dual carriage lane project. This demonstrates the government’s broader commitment to enhancing national connectivity.
The contractor, Arezki, has mobilized nearly 70% of the resources needed for the project, which is expected to be completed in 24 months. Managing Director Mr. Tarek Musa Arezki assured officials of his company’s readiness to deliver the project on time.
The ceremony, attended by key stakeholders, including ministers, National Assembly Members, and development partners, underscores the significance of the Bertil Harding Highway as a critical national asset.
Once completed, Phase III will not only improve traffic flow but also contribute to the region’s economic growth by facilitating better access for residential and commercial activities along the highway.
