Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Police in The Gambia have issued a public statement detailing its role in managing the recent student protest at the University of The Gambia (UTG) Kanifing campus, which escalated into chaos on Monday, December 2, 2024.
The demonstration stemmed from student outrage over the dismissal of two lecturers, Dr. Alieu Gibba and Associate Professor Matarr Njie.
According to the GPF, despite successful negotiations between the university administration and student representatives, tensions flared when an officer of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) acted unilaterally by deploying a gas spray, affecting those present.
The police have confirmed the officer’s identity following an internal investigation and stated that appropriate disciplinary measures have been taken to address the misconduct. In their statement, the GPF emphasized its commitment to maintaining professionalism and upholding the rule of law.
The protest turned chaotic, resulting in the collapse of three students who were evacuated to Kanifing Hospital for medical treatment. Their current condition remains unknown.
The GPF’s statement comes amid heightened public scrutiny over the handling of student protests and the protection of citizens’ rights during such events.
Students had gathered to voice their discontent over what they termed an unfair and controversial dismissal of their lecturers, calling for transparency and accountability from the university administration.
While the GPF acknowledged its responsibility for managing the situation, it reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring public safety without compromising the rights of demonstrators.
This incident has reignited debates over the role of law enforcement in safeguarding democratic expressions, particularly in academic spaces where freedom of thought and dissent are central to the environment.
