Gambiaj.com – -BANJUL, The Gambia) – Today, the Gambia Police Force marked the solemn first anniversary of the tragic deaths of Police Constables Sang J. Gomez and Pateh Jallow, who were brutally murdered while on duty at the Sukuta-Jabang junction. The commemoration, held at the Anti-Crime Unit Headquarters in Banjulunding, served as both a tribute to the fallen off#Ousainou(icers and a reaffirmation of the force’s commitment to justice and public safety.
The event, presided over by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Seedy Mukhtar Touray, drew a significant turnout, including senior government officials, security heads, regional security leaders, and the bereaved families of the officers. Also in attendance was Sgt. Ancy Jawo, the sole survivor of the attack, whose presence underscored the gravity of the loss.
In his address, IGP Touray lauded the bravery and dedication of the late officers, highlighting their commitment to duty in the face of danger. “Their sacrifice will not be forgotten,” Touray stated, pledging to enhance security measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. He also emphasized the ongoing pursuit of justice, ensuring that the legacy of the officers endures through the Gambia Police Force’s unwavering resolve.
Commissioner Momodou Sowe of the Anti-Crime Unit echoed Touray’s sentiments, expressing deep sorrow over the loss while reaffirming the unit’s dedication to maintaining peace and combating crime. “We are committed to upholding the values these officers stood for,” Sowe remarked, stressing the importance of unity within the force during these challenging times.
The commemoration also takes place as the legal proceedings against Ousainou Bojang, the principal suspect in the assassination of Constables Gomez and Jallow will resume soon. Bojang, who was arrested following an intensive manhunt, is currently on trial facing multiple charges, including two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of Prohibition of Acts of Terrorism, and one count of grievous bodily harm.
The trial has been closely watched, with the Gambia Police Force and the public eager for justice to be served. The case has brought national attention to the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the critical need for stronger protective measures.
As the nation reflects on the tragic events of September 2023, the commemoration at Banjulunding served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who protect and serve. A senior commander in the police says the Gambia Police Force will continue to honor the memory of Constables Gomez and Jallow by ensuring their sacrifice was not in vain.
The force’s leadership has vowed to continue pursuing justice, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding the community, and maintaining the peace for which the fallen officers gave their lives.
