Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force has launched an investigation into a WhatsApp audio recording containing derogatory remarks against Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, leader of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP).

According to a police statement, 48-year-old little known freelance commentator Bakou Jaw Jariso from Manjai Kunda voluntarily reported to police headquarters in Banjul on March 11, 2025, after being summoned in connection with the recording.

During questioning, Jariso admitted to circulating the audio in a WhatsApp group named “Amadou Sankareh Safe Lives.” He claimed the recording was a retaliatory response to alleged insults directed at President Adama Barrow by UDP militants. Expressing remorse, he cited anger, provocation, and emotional impulsivity as the reasons behind his actions.

The police have since cautioned, detained, and charged Jariso with “Incitement to Violence.” He has, however, been granted bail pending further proceedings.

In their statement, the police urged the public to refrain from sharing inflammatory content and to report any actions that could incite violence, emphasizing the importance of responsible communication in maintaining public order.

As for the alleged incriminated journalist, it appears that the Gambian media community knows very little or nothing about him. He is, by all accounts, one of the ruling NPP influencers who frequently accompany journalists to presidential events.

The incident has, however, sparked a debate among journalists and media professionals in The Gambia, with some expressing concern over the implications of Jariso’s actions on press freedom in the country.
