Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Police in The Gambia have issued a strong warning against any unauthorized protests, including a purported demonstration allegedly planned for Monday, December 2, 2024, in Kanifing by a faction of University of The Gambia (UTG) students.
In a press release, the GPF reminded the public that protests or public gatherings without the required permit are illegal and warned that such actions will not be tolerated. The statement emphasized that any individual or group found participating in an unauthorized protest will face legal consequences.
The GPF disclosed that it had engaged extensively with the ECOMANSA student association, a sub-association of the UTG Students’ Union, over their initial request to organize a protest. Following constructive dialogue, an agreement was reached to cancel the proposed demonstration.
However, reports have surfaced that a splinter group of students is disregarding this resolution and the position of the main student body. The police have expressed concern that such defiance could pose significant risks to public peace and safety.
“While The Gambia Police Force remains committed to upholding public safety and order and respecting the rights of all citizens, the public is urged to refrain from actions that could disrupt peace and strongly advised adherence to the law,” the statement noted.
The GPF called on citizens to exercise their right to protest responsibly and in full compliance with legal requirements to ensure the maintenance of public safety.
The police reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining law and order while protecting the rights of all citizens, urging students and the public at large to avoid activities that could lead to chaos or legal repercussions.
