Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has responded to a viral TikTok video alleging theft by an individual known as “Karanta” and accusations of police inaction. The GPF has urged victims of the alleged scammer to report to the Kairaba Police Station to facilitate a thorough investigation into the matter.
The GPF reassured the public of its commitment to justice and public safety. “We encourage anyone who has fallen victim to Karanta’s activities to come forward and file a report at the Kairaba Police Station,” the GPF stated.
The police emphasized their dedication to investigating all reported cases thoroughly and ensuring that concerns are addressed with the seriousness they deserve.
Karanta Darboe, a figure reportedly notorious for fraudulent activities, is implicated in a scam that occurred in March this year at the AMM Forex Bureau in Cape Point, Bakau. According to reports, Darboe managed to deceive the bureau attendant, Miss C, into exchanging over D100,000 in counterfeit currency.
The incident unfolded when Darboe arrived at the bureau in a vehicle, exchanging a 1,000 Swiss franc note for D73,500 at the prevailing rate of D73.50 per franc. He further exchanged four 100 US dollar notes, receiving D26,800 at a rate of D67 per dollar. The total transaction amounted to D100,300.
Shortly after the exchange, Darboe swiftly departed the scene. It was only when Miss C attempted to exchange the foreign currency at a nearby bureau that she discovered the notes were counterfeit. She immediately alerted her head office, which advised her to report the incident to the police.
