Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, the Gambia)- The Gambia has reaffirmed its support for the One China Policy and called for an end to the longstanding United States embargo on Cuba, Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow said during the opening of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Speaking to delegates, Jallow emphasized The Gambia’s commitment to international cooperation and fairness in global relations. “The Gambia continues to stand with the People’s Republic of China on their One China Policy,” he said, highlighting Beijing’s role in international development partnerships.

On Cuba, the Vice President described the economic sanctions as “unjustified” and called for their removal. “The embargo continues to inflict undue hardship and economic devastation, hence occasioning substantial challenges for the Government and People of Cuba. We believe it should give way to friendly cooperation. That is the way forward,” he told the assembly.

Jallow positioned these statements within a broader appeal for solidarity among nations, stressing that fairness and inclusivity should guide international decision-making. He argued that persistent embargoes and unilateral restrictions run counter to the founding principles of the United Nations and urged member states to prioritize cooperation over confrontation.

The Gambia has historically aligned itself with South-South partnerships, developing ties with China, Cuba, and other non-Western states. By reiterating these positions at the UN, Jallow underscored Banjul’s continued advocacy for greater equity in international affairs.

Research has it that he UN General Assembly has condemned the US embargo on Cuba annually for over three decades, yet the sanctions remain in place. Jallow’s comments place The Gambia alongside a growing group of nations pushing for the embargo’s removal while reaffirming support for China’s sovereignty claims.
