Gambiaj.com – (New York) – The Gambia has reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly endorsing the autonomy initiative as a definitive solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This declaration was made before members of the United Nations Committee of 24 (C24) during the Caribbean Regional Seminar held from May 14-16 in Caracas, Venezuela.

Lamin Dibba, The Gambia’s Permanent Ambassador to the UN, emphasized his country’s strong backing of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, describing it as a serious compromise and a viable solution to the ongoing regional dispute. He noted that the initiative enjoys significant international support and can contribute to the security and stability of the region, especially considering the security challenges in the Sahel.

Ambassador Dibba highlighted that the UN Security Council considers the autonomy plan serious and credible, aligning with international law. He praised Morocco’s constructive and cooperative approach and its commitment to resolving the dispute within the UN framework. He urged other stakeholders to adopt a constructive attitude to facilitate a compromise solution.

In his speech, Dibba lauded the efforts of Staffan de Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Moroccan Sahara, and called on all parties to stay engaged in the round table process to find a pragmatic and realistic resolution to the conflict.

Furthermore, the Gambian diplomat highlighted the significant role of regional commissions of the National Human Rights Council in Dakhla and Laâyoune. He acknowledged Morocco’s cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and various UN Human Rights Council procedures.

Dibba also commended the socio-economic development initiatives underway in the southern provinces, driven by Morocco’s new development model launched in 2015. This initiative, he noted, showcases Morocco’s long-term investment in the peace and development of the region, fostering economic growth and improving the living standards of local populations.

Lastly, the ambassador welcomed the participation of democratically elected representatives from the Moroccan Sahara in the seminar, underscoring the importance of inclusive representation in discussions about the region’s future.
