Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) has completed a comprehensive training program for 65 volunteers from all its branches, supported by funding from USAID’s International Disaster Assistance (IDA) program and in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The training focused on climate-smart programming, introducing volunteers to concepts like anticipatory action and locally-led adaptation. The goal was to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to support communities in reducing climate-related risks and responding to disasters effectively.
The volunteers are now capable of providing crucial first aid and emergency response services to communities across The Gambia. Topics covered in the training included disaster preparedness, search and rescue techniques, and medical triage.
This initiative underscores the significance of collaboration in enhancing resilience and preparedness in vulnerable communities. Conducted in three groupings, the training provided volunteers with a comprehensive understanding of new approaches to disaster preparedness, response, and climate change adaptation.
The partnership between USAID, IFRC, and GRCS has been instrumental in building resilience and saving lives in vulnerable communities.
As climate change continues to impact the frequency and severity of disasters, the training emphasized the importance of adapting to these changes.
Moving forward, GRCS remains committed to strengthening its capacity and serving the people of The Gambia by promoting resilience in the face of evolving climate conditions.
