Gambia Sets Up High-Level Committee To Review Telecoms Price Regulation

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Government of The Gambia has established a High-Level Committee to review recent regulatory decisions on telecommunications pricing, following growing public debate over interventions by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).

According to a statement from the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, President Adama Barrow convened a high-level meeting to address the concerns, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to consumer welfare and a competitive market.

The newly constituted committee brings together representatives from the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, PURA, and the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC).

Its mandate is to conduct a “comprehensive, impartial, and evidence-based review” of PURA’s recent decision on price regulation in the sector.

The government acknowledges and recognizes the concerns of the public and assures every Gambian that their interests, welfare, and rights with regard to fair and affordable services are the driving force behind these decisions,” the statement read.

The committee will seek to balance consumer protection with a fair operating environment for service providers, ensuring operators remain innovative while delivering high-quality services at competitive prices.

Officials emphasized that the move reflects the government’s commitment to transparent, consultative governance and constructive dialogue.

The public shall be updated in due course on the outcome of the consultations,” the statement added, pledging transparency in the review process as directed by President Barrow.
