Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Supreme Court of The Gambia, presided over by Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow and Justices Cherno Jallow, Awa Bah, Edrissa Mbai, and Omar Njie, has adjourned the appeal case of Yankuba Touray to its next session. The decision, rendered yesterday, followed the adoption of briefs of arguments by both the defense counsel, lawyer A. Sissoho, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), A.M. Yusuf.
Touray, a former minister in the government of ex-president Yahya Jammeh, was convicted on July 14, 2021, for his presumed role in the murder of Ousman Koro Ceesay, a former finance minister. The incident occurred in June 1995 during Touray’s tenure as a senior member of the ruling junta.
The High Court in Banjul, presided over by Justice Ebrima Jaiteh, sentenced Touray to death by hanging after finding him guilty of the murder charge. The prosecution presented a robust case, calling nine witnesses and tendering multiple exhibits, including the testimony of soldier Alagie Kanyi, who implicated Touray in the crime.
Following the High Court ruling, Touray sought redress at the Gambia Court of Appeal but was unsuccessful. He subsequently escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the conviction and the death sentence.
The adjournment marks the latest development in a high-profile case that has gripped the nation, particularly as it involves a senior official from a controversial chapter in The Gambia’s history.
