Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has dismissed Corporal Ebrima Jammeh following the release of a viral video in which he urged businesses to exercise patriotism and compassion amid the country’s worsening economic situation. Jammeh’s dismissal was first announced by What’s On – Gambia, a popular local media platform, which reported that the GAF deemed his actions as a breach of military code of conduct.
In the widely circulated video, Corporal Jammeh lamented the soaring prices of commodities and called on businesses to show empathy toward struggling Gambians. He argued that many workers in the country live paycheck to paycheck, making it essential for businesses to prioritize the well-being of the people over profit margins.
Following his dismissal, Jammeh sent a WhatsApp message to his colleagues, stating, “I am asking for forgiveness from each and every one during my tenure in the Gambia Armed Forces. Bye-bye to each and everyone.”
The decision to dismiss the soldier has sparked mixed reactions. Many social media users believe the punishment was too severe, arguing that his message was not political, inflammatory, or an incitement to civil disobedience. They contend that a warning or lesser disciplinary action would have sufficed, given Jammeh’s long service in the army since 2007.
Others, however, defended the military’s decision, citing the country’s tense socio-political climate. They argue that his remarks, though well-intentioned, could have resonated with many struggling citizens and inadvertently fueled calls for action against the government.
Meanwhile, some sympathizers have suggested organizing a fundraiser to support the dismissed corporal. However, What’s On – Gambia has announced that it will seek legal advice before proceeding, given the sensitivity surrounding military matters.
Corporal Jammeh’s dismissal underscores the delicate balance between freedom of expression and military discipline in The Gambia, particularly at a time when economic hardships continue to grip the nation.
