Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Gambian authorities have arrested a man attempting to smuggle a significant amount of cocaine through Banjul International Airport. Ebrima Makalo, a Gambian national with a Spanish residence permit, was apprehended on Saturday, June 22nd, 2024, at the boarding gate for a Veuling flight bound for Barcelona, Spain.

The Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG) officers discovered 131 pellets of suspected cocaine concealed within Makalo’s boxers during a routine security check. This arrest comes amidst a series of successful interdictions by DLEAG and other security personnel stationed at the airport. These efforts aim to solidify Banjul International Airport’s reputation as a secure environment and deter drug trafficking activities.

Jujus apparently didn’t work for Makalo

This recent arrest follows two prior drug busts at the airport. On June 11th, DLEAG and Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel apprehended Lamin Keita, also traveling to Barcelona on a Veuling flight. Keita was found to be carrying four blocks of cocaine weighing a total of five kilograms. Additionally, on an unspecified date, Senegalese national Abdourahim Diallo, a Spanish resident, was caught at the cabin screening point for a Royal Air Maroc flight bound for Casablanca, Morocco. Diallo, whose final destination was Spain, was found to be in possession of 120 pellets and three parcels of cocaine, weighing a total of 2.4 kilograms.

Ebrima Makalo is currently in custody while DLEAG conducts further investigations. These recent arrests demonstrate The Gambia’s commitment to combating drug trafficking within its borders and ensuring the safety and security of its airports.
