Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The National Bakers Union held a crucial meeting with President Adama Barrow on Friday to address significant issues impacting bread production in The Gambia. During the discussions at the State House, the union’s Secretary General, Lamin Dibba, outlined the challenges faced by bakers across the country, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention to improve the quality and safety of one of the nation’s most essential food staples.
Mr. Dibba highlighted that flour, a critical ingredient in bread-making, is among the most consumed commodities in The Gambia. He expressed the union’s concerns about the current state of bread production, which is plagued by inconsistent quality and safety standards. The union’s primary objective, as outlined by Dibba, is to introduce standardization measures that would not only enhance the hygienic quality of bread but also increase its availability to meet the growing demands of the population.
One of the key proposals put forward by the union is the establishment of a specific quota system for flour production. This system, according to Dibba, would ensure a steady supply of high-quality flour, thereby enabling bakers to produce safer and more consistent bread. He stressed that the union is facing difficulties in regulating the numerous entities involved in the bread-making process, underscoring the need for a multi-sectoral approach to address these challenges effectively.
President Barrow, in response, acknowledged the significance of the issues raised and expressed his gratitude for the union’s proactive stance. He advised the union to develop clear and specific guidelines for bread production that prioritize public health. Additionally, the President encouraged the union to strengthen its organizational structure to better unify its members and continue engaging in constructive dialogue with the Ministry of Trade.
Accompanying the union during the meeting was the Honourable Minister for Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment, Babucarr Joof, who echoed the President’s sentiments and emphasized the ministry’s readiness to support the bakers in their quest for improved standards in bread production.
The meeting marks a pivotal moment for the National Bakers Union as they seek to secure the necessary support and collaboration from the government to address the pressing issues within the industry. The union remains hopeful that with the backing of the President and the Ministry of Trade, substantial improvements in bread production can be achieved, benefiting both bakers and consumers across The Gambia.
