Gambiaj.com – (MIDRAND, South Africa) – A Gambian Delegation is currently attending the Third Ordinary Session of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), which commenced on Monday, June 24th, 2024, in Midrand, South Africa. This session, themed “Educate An African Fit For The 21st Century,” aligns with the African Union’s theme for the year, focusing on the critical importance of education in Africa’s development.

In his opening address, Pan-African Parliament President, H.E. Chief Fortune Charumbira, emphasized the need for substantial investment in education across the continent. He highlighted the disparities within the educational systems of various African nations and called for a comprehensive reform to ensure equitable access to education for all children.

“Education is considered a universal human right and a public good and responsibility. Sadly, many children on the continent do not enjoy this right due to inequalities in existing educational systems based on region, gender, and economic status. This means that securing the necessary resources to reform our education system is non-negotiable,” H.E. Charumbira stated.

Leading the Gambian delegation is Hon. Alhagie Mbow, who also serves as the Chairperson of the West African Caucus at the PAP. The delegation includes newly sworn-in PAP Member, Hon. Fatoumatta Njai, along with Hon. Sulayman Saho, Hon. Swaibou Touray, and Hon. Salifu Jawo.

The opening session featured solidarity messages from various dignitaries, including the Dean of Ambassadors of African Countries and the Speaker of the Arab Parliament, who served as the guest of honor. Hon. Fatou Jahumpa Ceesay, the Gambian Ambassador to South Africa, also attended the session and met with the Gambian delegation.

The Gambian representatives are actively participating in the discussions, contributing to the broader dialogue on educational reforms aimed at preparing African youth for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
