Gambian Deputies to ECOWAS Parliament Take Oath Despite Legal Dispute

The Gambia’s representatives to the ECOWAS Parliament officially took their oaths during the Inaugural Session of the Sixth Legislature on April 4, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria, despite facing a legal injunction issued by the High Court of The Gambia the previous day.

The High Court of The Gambia, under the jurisdiction of Justice A. Jallow Sey, granted an injunction in response to an ex-parte motion filed by ousted members Fatoumatta Njai, Kebba K.K Barrow, and Samba Jallow.

This injunction barred the clerk and the Minister of Justice from displacing the said members from their elected positions until the main motion is heard.

Nevertheless, the new members proceeded to take their oaths in the ECOWAS Parliament, marking the official beginning of the Sixth Legislature, succeeding the conclusion of the Fifth Legislature on March 8, 2024.

The Gambian delegation, led by Hon. Billay G Tunkara (Kantora), includes Hon. Alhagie S Darbo (Brikama North), Hon. Amadou Camara (Nianija), Hon. Sheriff Sarr (Jeshwang), and Hon. Maimuna Ceesay (Nominated).

They pledged their dedication before the Chairman of The Authority to serve the best interests of the West African sub-region, alongside other newly elected representatives from various ECOWAS member states.
