According to reliable sources, tension has escalated within the Gambian Embassy in Cuba as two diplomats, Sheikh Tijan Hydara, the ambassador, and Vincent Mendy, have been recalled amidst a clash over personal grievances. The altercation, reported by a source familiar with the matter to The Point, has prompted the government to launch an investigation into the unfolding situation.

Sheikh Tijan Hydara, who assumed the ambassadorial role on August 17, 2022, representing the opposition party, Gambia Alliance for National Unity (GANU), had forged an alliance with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) prior to his diplomatic appointment in 2023.

This recent diplomatic discord follows a previous incident in 2023 when three Gambian diplomats were expelled from the United States for violating immigration rules. As the investigation unfolds, the implications of this internal strife within the embassy remain uncertain, raising concerns about its potential impact on diplomatic relations between The Gambia and Cuba.
