Gambiaj.com – (Essau, The Gambia) The Solutions Journalism West Africa Fellowship (SoJo) has unveiled its latest cohort of fellows, recognizing nine exceptional individuals committed to advancing social justice and development across the region. Among the selected recipients is Ousman A. Marong, general manager of Niumi FM, a privately owned community radio station based in rural Essau, The Gambia.

Marong, known for his staunch advocacy against irregular migration and his commitment to youth empowerment, was celebrated for his dedication to journalism that addresses the root causes of social challenges.

The fellowship provides recipients with resources, mentorship, and a platform to implement impactful solutions-oriented journalism projects.

Speaking on his selection, Marong described the recognition as deeply meaningful. “This selection really means a lot to me. It encourages me to push harder for a journalism of necessity,” he said.

Marong recently commenced a specialized online program in Migration Studies with the Global Migration Media Academy in Geneva, Switzerland. He expressed hope that his academic and fellowship experiences would empower him to tackle some of the pressing challenges facing the Gambian media landscape.

To my fellow journalists, let’s be encouraged to aim for prestigious international awards and engage in journalism that benefits not only our countries but the world at large,” Marong urged. “I hope to identify solutions to The Gambia’s media problems upon the completion of my course in Nigeria.”

Highlighting disparities in access to media development resources, Marong called on institutions such as the US Embassy and United Nations bodies operating in The Gambia to decentralize support for the media. “Media benefits shouldn’t be restricted to the Greater Banjul Area. There’s a lot happening in the provinces that urgently needs media attention,” he stressed.

He reaffirmed his belief that responsible journalism is a vital pillar for societal progress. “Responsible journalists are born to make society livable,” Marong stated.

As he prepares for a four-month fellowship residency in Nigeria, Marong expressed profound gratitude to the Solutions Journalism West Africa Fellowship for the opportunity, pledging to use the platform to elevate marginalized voices and contribute to meaningful change in his community and beyond.
