Gambian Migrant Fatally Shot by German Police After Alleged Knife Attack

Lamin Touray

A tragic incident unfolded earlier Saturday in Germany as Lamin Touray, a 46-year-old Gambian migrant, was shot and killed by the German police. The Nienburg authorities reported that Touray had threatened his girlfriend with a knife, prompting her to flee and alert the police.

The Nienburg police released a statement on Facebook detailing the sequence of events leading to Touray’s death.

According to the statement, when the police arrived at the scene, Touray did not comply with their orders and instead attacked them with a knife. In the ensuing confrontation, Touray was shot several times and succumbed to his injuries.

During the altercation, a police officer and a service dog were seriously injured, according to Nienburg police authorities’ recounts. The policewoman was airlifted to the hospital, where her condition was reported as no longer life-threatening.

The police operation lasted for some time, during which Touray allegedly continued to resist police commands. Eyewitnesses reported hearing several shots during the incident.

Gambian migrants in Germany have condemned the police killing of Lamin Touray, calling for an investigation and protesting against the tragic death. They believe the police killed Touray intentionally due to his knife possession, and they believe the officers could have handled the situation better. They also question how well-trained German police officers could disarm a suspect armed with a knife without resorting to shooting.

The incident has raised questions about the use of force by police in such situations and has sparked discussions about migrant and police relations in Germany.
