Gambiaj.com – (Yarambamba, The Gambia) – A joint security operation led by immigration officials in The Gambia’s West Coast Region intercepted 75 would-be migrants attempting to embark on an irregular journey to Europe. The operation, carried out on Friday, March 21, 2025, in Yarambamba, was based on intelligence received a day earlier.
According to the Gambia Immigration Department (GID), officers acted on a tip-off regarding unusual movements in the area. Following a coordinated surveillance and intelligence-gathering effort, security forces successfully prevented the group from proceeding with their journey.
The individuals were detained and are currently undergoing processing under Gambian immigration laws.
Authorities revealed that the group comprises 34 Senegalese, 35 Guineans, 4 Gambians, and 2 Bissau Guineans. Among them are 63 males, 12 females, and 4 minors. Investigations indicate that they were sheltered in a compound allegedly rented by a Senegalese national, Abdoulaye Diop.
The interception highlights ongoing efforts by Gambian security forces to curb irregular migration and human smuggling. The GID has commended the collaboration between various security agencies, which led to the operation’s success.
Further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attempted migration are ongoing at the Migration Management Unit in Tanji.
