Gambiaj.com – (Las Palmas, Spain) – Dozens of Gambians and other African nationals staged a solidarity march in Las Palmas on Thursday to protest the fatal police shooting of 19-year-old Abdoulie Bah, a Gambian national killed by Spanish police near Gran Canaria Airport on Saturday, May 17.

The demonstrators, carrying placards and chanting justice slogans, demanded accountability and transparency over the circumstances that led to Bah’s death.

According to preliminary reports, Bah, who was reportedly suffering from acute mental distress due to schizophrenia, was shot after allegedly attacking a taxi driver with a knife.

In the wake of the incident, The Gambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad issued a press release expressing profound sorrow and condemning the use of lethal force.

“The Government of The Gambia deeply regrets the loss of a young life under such tragic circumstances and stands in solidarity with Mr. Bah’s grieving family and the wider Gambian community in Spain,” the statement read.

The ministry confirmed that a formal complaint has been lodged with Spanish authorities through The Gambia’s Embassy in Madrid. The embassy has demanded a full, transparent, and independent judicial investigation into the shooting.

To emphasize the government’s concern, the Deputy Head of Mission from the Gambian Embassy in Madrid has been dispatched to Las Palmas to engage directly with Spanish officials and local community leaders.

In parallel, the embassy is assisting Mr. Bah’s family in the repatriation of his remains to The Gambia for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

We reaffirm our commitment to the safety and well-being of all Gambians in the diaspora,” the ministry said, adding that it will continue to monitor the ongoing investigation and cooperate with Spanish authorities to ensure justice and prevent future incidents.

Further updates are expected as the judicial review and repatriation processes unfold.
