The Department of Fisheries in The Gambia is conducting a five-day training session on data collection in fisheries management for its staff, running from 20th to 25th February 2024. The training program has brought together participants from various units of the department.
In her opening statement, Anna Mbenga-Cham, the director of the Department of Fisheries, emphasized the crucial role of accurate and comprehensive data in decision-making, policy formulation, and sustainable resource management. Given the department’s mandate to protect, conserve, and manage marine resources, she stressed the importance of equipping staff with the necessary tools and knowledge for effective data collection, analysis, and utilization.
Participants in the training will delve into various aspects of data collection methodologies, techniques, and best practices over the five days. Mbenga-Cham urged all participants to actively engage, share experiences, and interact with trainers and fellow trainees. She encouraged them to seize the opportunity to broaden their understanding, enhance their skills, and contribute to the sustainable management of fisheries resources.
