Gambia’s Foreign Ministry Mobilizes Efforts to Support Gambian Migrants After Deadly Gas Explosion in Libya

Gambiaj.com—(BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad has announced the tragic death of two Gambian migrants and injuries to 15 others following a cooking gas explosion in the Arada district of Tripoli, Libya, earlier today.

The explosion, which occurred in a residential building housing approximately 35 Gambian nationals, has left three of the injured in critical condition, while 12 others suffered minor injuries and are receiving medical care. Libyan emergency and fire services responded swiftly to extinguish the fire and evacuate those affected.

In a statement issued by the ministry, it conveyed profound sorrow and extended its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. The ministry also expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, assuring them of the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and protection of Gambians abroad.

The Gambia Liaison Office in Tripoli, in close coordination with the Gambia Embassy in Rabat, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Libya, Libyan authorities, and the Gambian community in Libya, is providing urgent humanitarian and medical assistance to the affected migrants,” the ministry stated.

Efforts are underway to identify the deceased and injured, contact their families in The Gambia, establish the circumstances of the incident, and assess the extent of damage and further needs.

The Ministry assured the public that all necessary diplomatic and consular support is being mobilized. It will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as further details become available.

This tragedy highlights the challenges faced by Gambian migrants abroad, and the ministry reaffirmed its dedication to protecting the lives and well-being of its citizens wherever they may be.
