Gambiaj.com – (ACCRA, Ghana) – Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, the Honorable Minister of Information for The Gambia, participated in a high-profile global conference commemorating the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) in Accra, Ghana. Organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the Government of Ghana, the conference centered on the theme “Mainstreaming Access to Information and Participation in the Public Sector.”
The event brought together Information Ministers from across Africa, Information Commissioners, and global experts to discuss the importance of access to information in promoting good governance and democracy. Participants also examined the challenges that African nations face in ensuring transparent information dissemination and explored strategies for overcoming these barriers.
During a key panel discussion on advancing access to information in government institutions and the role of civil society, Hon. Dr. Ceesay outlined The Gambia’s initiatives aimed at enhancing transparency and public engagement. He highlighted the Ministry of Information’s regular press conferences, which provide a direct platform for the government to address national issues and engage with the media and citizens.
“Through these conferences, the government can address pressing national issues and provide clear information to counter misinformation,” Dr. Ceesay said.
He also spoke about the increasing role of social media in expanding the reach of government communications and fostering open discussions. Additionally, he spotlighted the Mansa Kunda initiative, a biweekly forum where sector Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, and heads of government departments meet directly with the public.
“This initiative has been crucial in fostering transparency and building trust between the government and the people of The Gambia,” Dr. Ceesay added.
While acknowledging the progress made, the Minister also noted the challenges that The Gambia faces in advancing access to information. He emphasized the need for continuous capacity building within government institutions to enhance their ability to manage and disseminate information effectively.
Dr. Ceesay also pointed out the deep-rooted institutional and cultural barriers that hinder information sharing, highlighting the importance of changing mindsets within both the government and the general public.
In his closing remarks, the Minister underscored the vital role of access to information in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in reducing inequality and fostering peace, justice, and strong institutions.
“The Gambia is committed to upholding the right of its citizens to access accurate and timely information, which is essential for nurturing democracy and sustaining peace,” Dr. Ceesay reaffirmed.
The conference in Accra served as a significant platform for African nations to exchange ideas and strategies for improving access to information, which remains a critical pillar of democratic governance across the continent.
