Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, an International Idea Resource Person and Special Envoy of ECOWAS, visited the State House in The Gambia to kickstart a joint mission involving the United Nations and International Idea. The mission aims to collaborate with the Ministry of Justice and the National Assembly on drafting a new constitution for the country before the end of the year.
Accompanied by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dawda Jallow, Dr. Chambas met with President Adama Barrow to discuss advancing the constitutional review process. Dr. Chambas highlighted the progress made since their last visit in August, acknowledging the continued efforts of Gambians and various institutions in advancing the process.
He emphasized the importance of addressing previous divisive issues to ensure the completion of the process this year. Dr. Chambas expressed confidence in the commitment of all stakeholders to finalize the new constitution and conduct a referendum by the end of the year.
Dr. Chambas assured that the international community, including the UN, International Idea, and other partners, will support the process led by Gambians. He expressed optimism that the new constitution will be a significant achievement and a legacy program of the current government.
