Gambia’s Parliament Steps Up Probe into Jammeh Asset Sales, Urges Public to Share Information

Select Committtee

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The National Assembly’s Special Select Committee tasked with investigating the sale and disposal of assets linked to former President Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh has announced that it is making significant strides in its work and has renewed calls for public assistance in uncovering the truth.

In a statement issued Monday, the committee confirmed that it has already summoned the first batch of key witnesses deemed relevant to its inquiry. Responses have been received, and the Committee is now in the process of rigorously examining the evidence and documentation submitted.

The Committee, which was formed to follow up on findings from the Janneh Commission—officially the Commission of Inquiry into the Financial Activities of Public Bodies, Enterprises and Offices—as they relate to Jammeh’s extensive financial dealings during his 22-year rule, reiterated its commitment to transparency and public accountability.

“This thorough review is essential to ensure a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the transactions in question,” the committee stated, adding that it remains dedicated to ensuring justice for the Gambian people.

The assets in question span a wide range, including real estate, luxury vehicles, and commercial ventures, many of which were seized following the Janneh Commission’s 2019 report. That report detailed how Jammeh siphoned hundreds of millions of dalasis from state institutions and abused his power for personal enrichment.

While some assets were auctioned or transferred to third parties, concerns remain over the legality and transparency of those transactions.

In a move underscoring its commitment to public participation, the committee has invited any individuals or entities in possession of relevant evidence—be it documents, testimony, or other material—to confidentially submit it to aid the investigation.

Submissions can be made via email at [specialselectcommittee@assembly.gm](mailto:specialselectcommittee@assembly.gm) or delivered in hard copy under sealed envelope to the Clerk of the National Assembly.

The committee concluded by assuring the public of its intent to carry out its work thoroughly and without delay, emphasizing that accountability and justice remain its guiding principles.

Former President Yahya Jammeh ruled The Gambia from 1994 to 2017. Following his departure and exile in Equatorial Guinea after losing the 2016 presidential election to Adama Barrow, his financial dealings came under intense scrutiny.

The Janneh Commission then revealed large-scale misappropriation of public funds and recommended the seizure and proper management of assets unlawfully acquired.

As The Gambia continues its democratic transition, the outcome of the Special Select Committee’s work is viewed as a key test of institutional integrity and the rule of law.
