Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) has announced a temporary suspension of all new land applications within the Tourism Development Area (TDA), citing the need for an ongoing audit to bring greater transparency and efficiency to land management in the area.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the Ministry clarified that the Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard) has been instructed to halt new applications until the audit exercise is completed. The initiative aims to ensure that future land application processes for tourism-related developments adhere to best practices and operate seamlessly.
“The goal of the audit is to bring clarity, transparency, and order to land management in the TDA, ensuring that the application, processing, and approval of land for tourism-related development are predictable, seamless, and in line with best practices,” the statement read.
Exceptions to the Suspension and Appeals Process for Disputes
The ministry acknowledged that exceptions to the suspension may be allowed on a case-by-case basis. Each request will be assessed individually, underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to accommodating specific circumstances while maintaining the overall objectives of the audit.
To address grievances and ensure accountability, MOTAC has also outlined a two-tier appeals process for individuals or organizations dissatisfied with decisions made by the GTBoard:
Dissatisfied parties can escalate their concerns to the GTBoard’s governing body through the chairperson.
If the decision of the Governing Body is unsatisfactory, the matter can be further appealed directly to the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
The ministry emphasized that these procedures are designed to enhance transparency and accountability in land transactions within the TDA.
MOTAC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a robust framework for sustainable tourism development in The Gambia. By temporarily pausing land applications, the ministry seeks to establish a clear and efficient system that aligns with the country’s vision for a thriving tourism sector.
Tourism stakeholders and members of the public are encouraged to direct inquiries or seek further clarification through the Ministry’s communication officer.
The Tourism Development Area is a key part of The Gambia’s economic and cultural identity, and MOTAC’s measures are seen as a strategic move to foster responsible and equitable development in the sector.
