Gambiaj.com – (ACCRA, Ghana) – A delegation from The Gambia’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment is currently in Ghana to gain insights into the country’s expertise in fair wages and salary management. Led by the Permanent Secretary, Lamin Dampha, the Gambian officials aim to study the best practices in wage determination and salary management, with the intent of applying similar strategies to enhance the economic well-being of workers in The Gambia.

During their visit, the Gambian delegation is shadowing officials from Ghana’s Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC). This hands-on approach allows them to observe the intricate process of wage calculation, salary administration, and the implementation of policies like the Single Spine Salary Pay Policy, which has been instrumental in ensuring fair compensation across various sectors in Ghana.

Mr. Lamin expressed The Gambia’s readiness to learn from Ghana’s labor management expertise, acknowledging the significant transformations that have positively impacted industrial relations in Ghana. He praised the FWSC for its success in negotiating conditions of service for 45 public-sector organizations, a testament to Ghana’s advanced labor management practices.

The visit also serves to strengthen the historical relationship between The Gambia and Ghana. Mr. Lamin emphasized the growing collaboration between the two nations in labor-sector development, expressing gratitude for the knowledge shared by the FWSC and a hope that the relationship would continue to flourish.

Benjamin Arthur, Chief Executive Officer of the FWSC, welcomed the delegation and provided an overview of the Commission’s operations and achievements. He highlighted the development of a blueprint for linking pay to performance and productivity in the public sector, as well as efforts to sanitize the government payroll system and ensure compliance with the Single Spine Pay Policy. The Commission’s engagement with 450 stakeholders in harmonizing salary administration further underscored its commitment to sustainable wage management.

As the Gambian officials continue their study tour, they are expected to gain valuable insights that will contribute to the enhancement of The Gambia’s labor sector, fostering improved wages, and better working conditions for Gambian workers.
