Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Authorities are investigating the theft of telecommunications cables valued at D11 million from Gamtel’s Abuko branch, in what is suspected to be an inside job.
The theft was discovered a few days ago when technicians were unable to locate the cables required for a scheduled maintenance operation. The missing cables were stored in a secure area accessible only to authorized personnel, raising suspicions that the crime may have involved individuals with insider knowledge.
As part of the ongoing probe, several Gamtel staff members were summoned for questioning at the Abuko Police Post on Tuesday. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway, with Gamtel actively cooperating to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The telecommunications company is also working with authorities to recover the stolen property. Meanwhile, concerns are growing over the potential impact of the theft on network maintenance and service delivery.
The Gamtel management has encouraged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.
