Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has announced its openness to forming a broad opposition coalition as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2026 elections.
Senior party official Ebrima Nyang confirmed the development during an interview with STAR FM, describing unity among opposition forces as essential to strengthening democratic participation.
Nyang said the current political landscape calls for “maturity and strategic collaboration” among parties that share a commitment to national development and good governance.
“We are open to discussions with any political party that puts the interest of The Gambia first. If coming together will strengthen our democracy and give Gambians a stronger voice, then GDC is ready to be part of that coalition,” he stated.
According to Nyang, the GDC believes political diversity should work in the service of citizens, not deepen political fault lines. He stressed that any coalition-building process must be anchored in transparency, mutual respect, and a clearly defined roadmap for governance reforms.
“The desire to meet the needs of the Gambian people is the only thing that drives our party leader, Mama Kandeh. He has turned to other Gambians for assistance whenever he feels he cannot succeed on his own. As you may remember, he went to see President Barrow multiple times to ask for his help with issues that affected Gambians,” Nyang remarked.
Nyang’s remarks could mark the beginning of a new phase of opposition realignment as parties weigh potential alliances ahead of the next election cycle. With public interest in broader political cooperation growing, his comments are expected to spark fresh discussions among key opposition players.
The GDC is expected to unveil additional details on its coalition stance as internal consultations continue.
