GDC’s Alhagie H. Sowe Resigns; Speculation Mounts Over Possible Move to Barrow’s Camp

Jiamara

Gambiaj.com – (Sare Kokeh, Jimara District) – Hon. Alhagie H. Sowe, a prominent figure in the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), and former member of parliament has resigned from the party with immediate effect, sparking speculation over his next political move and the future of Jimara, a constituency long considered a GDC stronghold.

In a resignation letter dated October 18, 2025, addressed to the GDC Administrative Secretary, Sowe stepped down from his dual roles as the party’s Auditor General and Regional Desk Officer for the Upper River Region (URR), a move many have de facto assimilated to an effective resignation from the party.

He described the decision as “one of the most difficult choices” of his political career, noting that it came after “deep reflection” despite years of loyal service to the party and its supporters.

The GDC has been more than a political organization to me. It has been a family, a movement, and a platform through which I have strived to serve my people with integrity and purpose,” Sowe wrote.

He expressed gratitude to party leader Hon. Mamma Kandeh, the GDC executive, and his constituents in Jimara, stressing that his commitment to development and justice “does not end here.

While Sowe did not disclose his next political destination, his exit adds fuel to growing speculation that President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP) is quietly targeting soft spots within the GDC, particularly in Jimara.

Analysts note that with coalition talks between the GDC and NPP stalled, Barrow’s camp may be courting key figures like Sowe to shift the balance of power in constituencies where the GDC has historically been dominant.

Sowe’s resignation is seen by some as the beginning of a potential political realignment in URR. His popularity in Jimara and his deep-rooted connections to grassroots supporters make him a valuable asset for any party seeking to consolidate influence in the region.

For now, Sowe has kept his cards close to his chest, saying only that his “desire to bring meaningful change to people’s lives remains steadfast and will continue to guide” his path forward.

Whether that path keeps him within the GDC orbit as an independent-minded figure or leads him to cross over to Barrow’s NPP remains to be seen.

The development comes at a delicate time for Mamma Kandeh’s GDC, which has struggled to maintain its foothold amid growing political realignments ahead of future elections.
