Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – The Minister of Works, Ebrima Sillah, expressed optimism that the ongoing road project from Airport Junction to Bijilo, where the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit is scheduled to take place in four days, will be completed before the due date.
During a government press briefing on the upcoming OIC summit, Minister Sillah stated that the finishing work, including the painting of lanes, is expected to be done within the remaining time. He highlighted the challenges faced during the project, noting that the road had been cleaned multiple times due to the significant traffic of trucks from Banjul to the Kombo’s, which often leaves sand on the edges of the road.
Minister Sillah called on stakeholders within the transport system to assist the government in maintaining the road clean. He also mentioned the government’s purchase of a road clearing machine, which will be used regularly even after the conference to ensure the roads remain clear.
While acknowledging that cleaning roads is typically the responsibility of municipalities, Minister Sillah urged them to fulfill their duty, especially considering the taxes they collect from taxpayers. He emphasized the need for collaboration between the Ministry, the National Roads Authority (NRA), and municipalities to maintain clean roads.
The government’s efforts to complete the road project before the OIC summit demonstrate its commitment to ensuring a smooth and successful conference. The completion of the project will not only benefit the summit but also improve the overall infrastructure and transportation in the area.
