Gambiaj.com – (BISSAU, Guinea Bissau) – Guinea-Bissau recently extradited Ansumana (Ansu) Jarju, a Gambian national suspected of involvement in a January 2025 armed robbery at an Access Bank branch in Brusubi, The Gambia. According to Guinea-Bissau’s Judicial Police, the decision to extradite Ansu Jarju to the Gambia was based on legal obligations for Guinea-Bissau, outlined in the ECOWAS Police Cooperation Agreement, reinforcing regional collaboration in criminal justice.
According to a statement from the Judicial Police of Guinea-Bissau, Jarju was arrested in Bissau on February 8, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., following an operational mission launched in response to a formal extradition request from Gambian authorities.
The suspect had allegedly participated in the violent daylight robbery on January 22, 2024, alongside two accomplices, using firearms to seize approximately 1.5 million Gambian Dalasis before fleeing.
The extradition was carried out under Article 11 of the ECOWAS Police Cooperation Agreement, which mandates member states to collaborate on combating transnational crime. This legal framework ensures that fugitives cannot evade justice by crossing national borders within the West African bloc.
By swiftly honoring The Gambia’s request, Guinea-Bissau reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security cooperation and preventing impunity for cross-border criminals.
The Judicial Police of Guinea-Bissau emphasized their dedication to continued collaboration with national and international security bodies, pledging to uphold regional stability by tackling organized crime. The handover of Jarju to Gambian authorities marks a significant step in reinforcing judicial cooperation across West Africa.
