Gambiaj.com – (BISSAU) – The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Guinea-Bissau (EMGFA) has responded fiercely to accusations from the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), labeling them as “serious, incomprehensible, and provocative.” The PAIGC criticized the Armed Forces (FA) for allegedly meddling in politics and consistently supporting the President of the Republic.
General Samuel Fernandes, the military’s spokesperson, condemned the PAIGC’s statements as “pathetic” and declared the EMGFA’s determination to act firmly against any attempts to disrupt the constitutional order. He emphasized that the Armed Forces are not under the control of any political party and warned against manipulating them for political gain.
Fernandes stated that the FA have been conducting awareness campaigns among the military to remain impartial and resist any attempts to influence them. Regarding allegations of politicians’ involvement in two recent coup attempts, he promised clarification at the appropriate time and forums.
The PAIGC’s vice president, Dan Ialá N’Canha Baranção, vehemently criticized what she perceived as the military’s interference in politics, accusing them of violating their republican role. She pointed to the Armed Forces’ biased speeches and their overt support for the President, even when it contradicts the Constitution and laws of the Republic.
The PAIGC urged the military to uphold its role as a guardian of sovereignty, while respecting the principle of separation of powers. Tensions between the military and the PAIGC highlight the fragile political situation in Guinea-Bissau, with concerns rising about the potential for further instability.
The conflict underscores the need for dialogue and adherence to constitutional principles to prevent a deterioration of the political situation in Guinea-Bissau.
