Guinea-Bissau Political Crisis – API CG Coalition and PAIGC Call for Popular March to Defend Democracy

Gambiaj.com – (BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau) The Inclusive Patriotic Alliance Cabas Garande (API CG), a coalition comprising MADEM G15, the PRS, FREPASNA, and APU-PDGB, has announced plans to organize a popular march on November 15 to “rescue the country and democracy,” following a series of controversial political developments in Guinea-Bissau.

The coalition’s decision, made during a press conference on Sunday, was a direct response to recent actions by the government and the Supreme Court of Guinea-Bissau, which they claim have undermined democratic processes in the country.

Fidélis Forbs, the interim coordinator of MADEM G15, spoke passionately about the deteriorating political situation, asserting that their movement is committed to peace and dialogue but warned that the government’s actions could force them into street protests.

“We are the defenders of the peace of dialogue; therefore, we call for the Guinean people, especially political actors, to act responsibly,” Forbs said. “If things continue down this path, we will make a popular march to rescue our country, even in the face of tear gas.”

The call for protests follows the announcement on November 1 by the government, citing “technical conditions” as the reason for postponing the legislative elections initially scheduled for November 24. President Umaro Sissoco Embaló’s subsequent statement confirmed the postponement, with no new date set for the elections, further intensifying concerns over the country’s political stability.

The political crisis deepened on November 4, when the PR issued a decree repealing the previous decree that set the election date. The situation worsened with a ruling from the Supreme Court of Justice (STJ), which ordered the API CG, under the coordination of Braima Camará and Fernando Dias of the PRS, to resign their membership from their respective parties. In another contentious decision, the court prohibited the API CG from participating in the postponed legislative elections.

Meanwhile, to “reposition constitutional normality in the country,” the leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) and coordinator of the PAI Terra-Ranka Coalition announced on Monday that his coalition had agreed to initiate joint policy actions with the Platform of the Inclusive Alliance, API (Cabas Garandi).

Simões Pereira revealed that, during the meeting, the two groups agreed that their respective secretariats would collaborate to propose a realistic action timetable aimed at restoring constitutional normality in Guinea-Bissau.

When asked about the implementation of this calendar and whether it would involve street protests, he explained that they would rely on the political platforms and groupings for guidance.

At the meeting of the “Cabas Garandi” API leaders, spokesperson Baciro Djá expressed satisfaction with the proposed timeline. Djá reiterated their commitment to pursuing the political demands and action plan, including the planned marches on November 14, 15, and 16.
