Guinea-Bissau Prime Minister Collapses at Ceremony, Evacuated to Dakar for Treatment

Braima Camara

Gambiaj.com – (BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau) – The Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau, Braima Camará, was rushed to Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, after fainting during a ceremony at the presidential palace in Bissau, according to reports by the Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Witnesses said Camará collapsed while standing alongside other Guinean officials as President Umaro Sissoco Embaló delivered remarks. “At the end of the ceremony, he felt unwell and fainted,” a source close to the prime minister’s office told AFP.

Following initial medical attention, Camará was flown aboard a Senegalese military medical aircraft to Dakar, where he was admitted to hospital. Although no official government statement has been released, a member of the prime minister’s entourage said, “The prime minister is out of danger; he received very quick and effective care even before being evacuated.”

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in Guinea-Bissau. Just three days earlier, Camará was suspended by his political coalition, the Inclusive Patriotic Alliance – Cabaz Garandi (API-CG), for accepting his appointment as prime minister without the group’s authorization.

The coalition, which remains aligned with the Inclusive Alliance Platform (PAI) – Terra Ranka, denounced his participation in President Embaló’s “presidential initiative” government as a violation of their pact.

The API-CG reaffirmed its support for the Terra Ranka coalition and demanded free and transparent elections scheduled for November 23. It also condemned the expulsion of Portuguese media outlets RTP África, RDP África, and Agência Lusa from the country, urging the government to provide explanations.

Camará, who succeeded Rui de Barros in December 2023, now leads a government widely criticized by opposition groups for bypassing parliamentary processes after Embaló dissolved the legislature. His sudden health scare adds fresh uncertainty to the political landscape as Guinea-Bissau navigates another turbulent pre-election period.
