Gambiaj.com – (Bissau, Guinea-Bissau) – The Chief of General Staff of Guinea-Bissau’s Armed Forces, General Biaguê Na N’Tan, has issued a stern warning against any attempt to subvert the country’s constitutional order, declaring a policy of “zero tolerance” for such actions.
Speaking on Thursday during a visit to several ongoing military infrastructure projects, including the General Biaguê Clussé Military Formation School in N’Tan, the Mechanized Brigade, and a military hospital under construction, General N’Tan emphasized the Armed Forces’ dual role in both nation-building and safeguarding national stability.
“Our commitment is to peace and tranquility,” the general stated, adding that the military remains vigilant against any groups or individuals seeking to destabilize Guinea-Bissau. “We will not allow anyone to take up arms and terrorize the streets, killing innocent people and then walking freely,” he said.
General N’Tan noted that the Armed Forces are not only engaged in physical development projects, such as the construction of new facilities and hospital infrastructure, but also in strengthening their human capacity.
He highlighted that a significant number of young military personnel are currently studying abroad, which he sees as essential to ensuring the Armed Forces’ future self-reliance and professionalism.
Addressing both junior and senior officers, he called for discipline, patriotism, and a firm commitment to republican values. He stressed that any form of manipulation or mobilization of troops for political purposes, particularly through financial incentives, would be met with swift punishment.
“I call on all generals, National Guard commanders, and public order police to ensure that peace prevails in our streets. Our duty is to protect the government, the president, and the people of Guinea-Bissau, especially as we prepare for upcoming elections,” he declared.
The Armed Forces General Chief of Staff’s remarks come amid a tense regional climate where coups and unconstitutional changes of power have recently plagued several West African nations. His comments appear aimed at reassuring the public and the international community of Guinea-Bissau’s commitment to democratic norms and institutional stability.
