Umaro Sisoco Embalo ECOWAS

Gambiaj.com – (Bissau, Guinea-Bissau) – President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has reaffirmed that Guinea-Bissau’s general elections will proceed as scheduled on November 30, dismissing any possibility of delay. Speaking to the press on Monday following a meeting with a high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Embaló asserted that the only scenario in which the elections would not take place is his death.

Embaló, who intends to seek re-election, expressed confidence in securing victory in the first round. He also emphasized financial accountability for candidates, stating that all participants must fulfill tax obligations, settle debts owed to the state, and face justice if implicated in financial misconduct.

The ECOWAS mission, which arrived in Bissau on Sunday, is engaging with Guinean political stakeholders to support the country’s electoral process.

Following discussions with President Embaló, the delegation held separate meetings with Adja Satu Camará, the acting president of the National People’s Assembly, the National Elections Commission (CNE), Interior Minister Botche Candé, and the Directorate of the Technical Office to Support the Electoral Process.

The visit underscores ECOWAS’ commitment to ensuring a credible and transparent electoral process in Guinea-Bissau as the country moves closer to its scheduled vote.
