Gambiaj.com – (Conakry, Guinea) – The Forces Vives de Guinée (FVG), a coalition of political parties, civil society groups, and trade unions, has announced a fresh wave of protests beginning on September 5 to oppose the draft Constitution set for a referendum on September 21.

In a statement released on Tuesday, September 2, the coalition warned that the proposed text paves the way for “a presidency for life for Mamadi Doumbouya” and represents “the burial of democracy and the rule of law” in Guinea.

The FVG accuses the transitional president of reneging on his initial pledge not to contest the presidential election that is expected to mark the country’s return to constitutional order.

They argue that the new Constitution is designed to “confiscate citizens’ rights and freedoms” and is being pushed through under “a campaign of terror, intimidation, and corruption” coupled with “an unprecedented deployment” of security forces.

September 5 will only be the first step, the beginning of a vast movement that will gradually extend throughout the country and abroad,” the coalition declared, urging Guineans to mobilize “massively” and “combatively.”

The transitional authorities, in power since the September 5, 2021, coup that brought Colonel Doumbouya to leadership, have not yet responded to the FVG’s statement. The government, however, has consistently defended the draft Constitution, portraying it as a document intended to “strengthen institutions and consolidate national unity.”

The coming weeks are expected to test Guinea’s political stability as the referendum date draws closer and opposition mobilization intensifies.
