Gambiaj.com – (CONAKRY, Guinea) – Guinea’s Supreme Court on Sunday evening, January 5, officially confirmed the victory of General Mamadi Doumbouya in the December 28 presidential election, declaring him president with 86.72 percent of the vote.
Doumbouya, running as an independent candidate, was elected in the first round for a seven-year term following a vote that was widely boycotted by major opposition parties. Several prominent opposition figures were excluded from the race, leaving the head of the military-led transition to face little-known challengers.
The confirmation was announced by Supreme Court President Fodé Bangoura, who stated that Doumbouya had secured “the highest number of votes” and was therefore “elected President of the Republic of Guinea in the first round for a seven-year mandate.”
Call for Unity After Official Results
In his first address to the nation since the official proclamation of the results, President-elect Doumbouya urged Guineans to come together to build what he described as a country of “political and economic sovereignty.”
“By granting me an absolute majority in the first round, your choice obliges me even more,” he said, praising the population for what he called its “maturity, calm, and dignity” throughout the electoral process.
Doumbouya pledged to extend “a hand to all daughters and sons of Guinea” to jointly build a prosperous future. Looking ahead, he announced that “the year 2026 will be one of work, discipline, unity, and shared hope,” promising that Guineans would “write a new page of our history in the exclusive service of the sovereign people of Guinea.”
The president-elect also explained his silence during the end-of-year period, noting that the electoral calendar had prevented him from delivering the traditional New Year’s address. “I was a candidate, and respect for institutions and the process required a republican attitude,” he said.
Mixed Political Reactions
Reactions from other candidates and political parties were largely conciliatory. Ibrahima Abé Sylla of Nouvelle Génération pour la République congratulated Doumbouya and called for national unity, urging citizens to rally around a socio-economic development agenda for the country.
Sidibé Ousmane, a member of the political bureau of the Rassemblement des Guinéens pour la prospérité led by Elhadj Bouna Kéita, echoed similar sentiments, arguing that Guinea itself had emerged victorious from the election.
“Above all, today, it is Guinea that wins,” he said, welcoming what he described as a positive democratic dynamic. He praised the “republican spirit” shown by the nine candidates and highlighted what he called a commendable display of political maturity.
Following the Supreme Court’s confirmation, Mamadi Doumbouya reiterated his call for the construction of a “Guinea of peace and shared prosperity,” as the country enters a new political chapter under his presidency.
