The recent ruling by the Senegalese Constitutional Court, canceling President Macky Sall’s delay of the February 25th presidential election, has been met with relief across Senegal, even within the President’s own family.
Senegal’s top court has declared the postponement by President Macky Sall of this month’s elections unconstitutional. The decision nullifies President Sall’s decree and a controversial bill passed by parliament, which had rescheduled the vote to December.
In its decision issued on Thursday (February 15th), the Senegalese Constitutional Council referred to “the impossibility of holding the presidential election on the date originally planned” to February 25.
In a significant development amidst political turmoil, a group of activists who had been detained for several months on various charges related to political activities were temporarily released on Thursday, as confirmed by one of their lawyers to the Senegalese news agency APS.
