Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – In response to mounting allegations of land misuse and illegal transactions, The Gambia’s Minister of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Hamat N. K. Bah, has announced the immediate suspension of the Alkalolu of Manduar and Old Jeshwang communities.
The suspensions come after reports surfaced of abuse of government and community-designated lands, particularly concerning the proposed bypass from Sting Corner to Abuko in Kombo St. Mary, and illegal land transactions within the Tambi Wetland allegedly involving the Alkalo of Jeswang.
The Ministry of Lands is deeply troubled by reports of illegal land sales and transactions within the Koto Balli Community Forest in Manduar, Brikama South, West Coast Region. To address these concerns, the Minister will establish a task force to investigate these allegations thoroughly.
During the investigation, acting Alkalolu will be appointed for both Jeshwang and Manduar communities. The government advises the public, especially residents of Manduar and Old Jeshwang, against engaging in any land transactions with the suspended Alkalolu.
Furthermore, reports indicate alleged involvement of the Alkalolu of Batokunku and Tanji in illegal land sales within the Tanji Layout. The government emphasizes that selling land in any government-designated layouts is strictly prohibited, warning these Alkalolu to cease such activities immediately.
The government also warns that any Ministry of Lands staff or other officials found involved in facilitating illegal land sales within designated layouts will face disciplinary action according to the law.
In conclusion, the government urges the concerned communities to maintain decorum and civility, emphasizing the importance of conducting themselves in a manner consistent with the law.
